Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU TUESDAY JUNE 03
A modest increase in afternoon winds on Sunday afternoon probably helped
the Valley avoid another widespread unhealthy ground-level ozone event;
as it was, one site did exceed the new health standard and seven others
were within four parts per billion of doing so. With four months still
to go in the 2008 ozone "season", there have already been eight days
with locally unhealthy ozone levels and a total of 32 site exceedances.
Meanwhile, the mid-latitude storm track is expected to become active
again over the western U.S. with an upper level trough becoming
established nearby from late Tuesday thru Thursday. Upstream wind
trajectories in the 5-10K' layer indicate periodic flow from California
will continue thru at least Wednesday morning. As has been the case
since April, this poses a risk of non-indigenous ozone and its
precursors reaching the local forecast area and adding to the ozone
pollution levels. For this reason today's Ozone Health Watch has been
extended thru Tuesday. Strong and gusty winds are likely on Wednesday
as the trough reaches its peak strength with some blowing dust possible
by the afternoon. -Reith
