Synopsis and Discussion
High pressure aloft, currently centered over northern Baja, is advertised to move slowly northeast to a position over the AZ/NM border by Thursday. Westerly flow aloft associated with the high has already ushered in much drier air over the local forecast area; dew points as of 11:00 a.m. were in the 30's and 40's around the metro area versus the 60's last week. As the high moves closer, Valley afternoon temperatures will trend upward and reach 110 degrees by Wednesday. Under sunny skies local ozone production will be very efficient, but westerly afternoon surface winds should help keep ground-level ozone accumulations below average thru this forecast period. However, by Wednesday afternoon winds aloft are forecast to shift to easterly above the 15K' level over the metro area, and down to the 10K' level by Thursday afternoon. These increasing counter-winds will likely contribute to higher ozone levels later this week.
