Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU FRIDAY JULY 18
Summer monsoon shower and thunderstorm activity will be relatively
sparse over Arizona the next day or so and absent completely from the
local forecast area due to westerly winds aloft along with some drying
of the atmosphere. A rapid and major upswing is predicted to occur this
weekend as an upper level high becomes established near the Four
Corners. Strong easterly flow aloft will import deep moisture as well
as bring embedded weather disturbances overhead. This shift in the
winds may bode ill for local ozone levels as well; easterly flow is
advertised to be over the Valley above about 7500' as early as tomorrow
evening. Whereas elevated ozone levels have been confined to the far
eastern Valley the past few days due to westerly afternoon winds, a
countering wind tends to allow above-average ozone accumulation to occur
over a substantial portion of the metro area. Also, afternoon
temperatures near or in excess of 110 degrees under sunny skies will
favor efficient ozone formation. For now the existing Ozone Health
Watch has been extended, but the situation may eventually require the
issuance of a High Pollution Advisory. -Reith
