Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 16
A weak upper level low over southern California will move slowly east
the next few days. As it does so winds aloft over Arizona will become
westerly thru an increasingly deep layer of the atmosphere. This will
result in the first significant break of the 2008 summer monsoon for the
local forecast area by decreasing moisture levels and tending to steer
the majority of storms that form over the higher terrain away from the
Valley. It will also likely mean an increase in local ozone production
and levels due to more sunshine and hotter afternoon temperatures. As
of 10:00 a.m. today hourly concentrations were 10-20 parts per billion
higher than those of 24 hours ago. Since it is possible that ozone
pollution may approach unhealthy levels over the northeast and east
Valley as early as Wednesday, an Ozone Health Watch has been issued.
