Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY TUESDAY JULY 08
AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 09
Of the 88 ozone site exceedances that have occurred so far this season,
over 60% have occurred at locations that are normally downwind of the
main metro area, such as Apache Junction, Cave Creek, Fountain Hills,
etc. One need only look at the locations of Monday's unhealthy ozone
levels to see that a local easterly wind regime was in place; most sites
with exceedances were within a relatively narrow geographical area of
the Valley. This exceedance pattern can be a frequent occurrence during
active summer monsoon periods since the same flow pattern that imports
deeper moisture tends to offset afternoon upslope winds caused by
daytime heating; the result is much above average ozone accumulation.
Since this pattern is forecast to persist for at least a few more days,
more unhealthy ozone levels are likely; for this reason, an Ozone High
Pollution Advisory has been issued for Wednesday. Fortunately, a
significant increase in monsoon moisture looks possible by Friday, and
extensive residual daytime cloud cover could keep ozone levels well
below their potential. Thus, it remains to be seen if the HPA will need
to be extended. -Reith
