Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY JULY 08
Ozone levels will likely be trending upward toward unhealthy levels the
next few days. Barring significant and thick afternoon convective cloud
debris, mostly sunny and hot days will be conducive to efficient ozone
production. Climatologically speaking, local ozone concentrations reach
their peak during the month of July. The weak trough currently overhead
is forecast to be replaced by a west-east ridge axis aloft that will
build to the north of Arizona on Tuesday. As a result, winds over the
local forecast area should become increasing easterly at lower levels in
the atmosphere. This will tend to counter afternoon westerly breezes
caused by daytime heating and produce above average ozone accumulation
over an increasingly large portion of the metro area. For now an Ozone
Health Watch has been issued to cover this situation, but a High
Pollution Advisory issuance may be in the offing as early as Tuesday's
forecast cycle. -Reith
