Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR FRIDAY JULY 04
After 11 days without an exceedance, ground-level ozone concentrations
returned to unhealthy levels over the northeast and east portions of the
metro area on Wednesday. Ozone accumulation was higher than expected,
and based on elevated ozone levels upwind of the Valley, some transport
from California may have entered the picture. The highest hourly
concentration of the season thus far, 104 parts per billion, occurred at
the Rio Verde site at 3:00 p.m. At 10:00 a.m. today ozone levels were
mostly below those of 24 hours ago, and it appears that there is a
better chance of clouds and winds associated with outflow boundaries
from thunderstorms over the Rim reaching the metro area by late
afternoon. This situation usually decreases ozone production and
interrupts plume transport. The lack of morning traffic on Friday may
allow ozone levels to begin the day higher, while daytime traffic will
provide sufficient precursors for afternoon ozone production. Thus, an
Ozone Health Watch has been issued for Friday as a precaution for those
with respiratory conditions such as asthma. -Reith
