Synopsis and Discussion
Winds from one of Tuesday evening's stronger thunderstorm outflow
boundaries contributed to dense blowing dust over portions of the metro
area: visibilities as low as two miles were reported at Deer Valley
Airport with seven miles at Luke AFB. Hourly coarse particle (PM-10)
concentrations at the monitoring site in Buckeye reached 2,327ug/m3 at
6:00 p.m., a reading that was instrumental in producing a PM-10
exceedance of the federal health standard there. The upper level
circulation center associated with the summer monsoon has been ideally
positioned to direct storms that form over the Mogollon Rim toward the
Valley but not to import much additional moisture; therefore, late
afternoon dust storms are possible for at least the next few days. The
combination of increasing afternoon winds and cloud cover has played a
role in keeping local ozone levels below their potential, but an upward
spike is possible on Thursday as precursor-emitting vehicles head north
for the holiday weekend. However, since winds in the 5-10K' layer are
forecast to remain westerly into the weekend, good ventilation and below
average accumulation are likely and highest concentrations should be
confined to the northeast and east Valley. -Reith
