Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY JULY 01
A significant increase in local ozone levels occurred on Monday with
near-exceedances at several locations in the north and northeast Valley.
A similar situation is underway today, and as of 10:00 a.m. all ozone
monitoring sites had hourly concentrations within +/- a few parts per
billion of those 24 hours ago; today's Ozone Health Watch will remain in
effect. Latest ACARS sounding data indicates that winds over the metro
area are southeast to southwesterly to 15 mph up to 4K', veering to
northwest to northeasterly at speeds up to 20 mph thru 16K'. Low-level
gradient winds are forecast to become westerly by Wednesday afternoon
and remain so thru at least Friday. When gradient winds coincide with
the usual westerly afternoon upslope winds associated with daytime
heating, the combined result is breezy to gusty winds from the
comparatively ozone precursor-free desert regions upwind of the Valley.
For this reason, ozone levels are expected to exhibit a drop on
Wednesday with only locations downwind of the metro area having elevated
readings by then. -Reith
