Synopsis and Discussion
As forecasted, winds picked up late on New Years Eve and continued
through much of New Years Day, negating the effect of residential wood
burning that has been know to cause exceedances of the PM2.5 health
standard during this time of year here in the Valley. As a result,
those fine particulate levels only reached the mid "Moderate" range at
the most. Clouds rule the skies Wednesday morning as the disturbance we
spoke of in the last few forecasts is now over northern Mexico and ready
to move through southeastern Arizona. The surface remains too dry to
support any rain, so as the low continues to spin away from the region,
these clouds will begin to thin and eventually clear skies will prevail
as high pressure temporarily takes control. Temporary is the key word
here as a strengthening trough of low pressure off the Pacific coast is
expected to bring cooler weather and potentially desert rains this
weekend. It's possible the Phoenix forecast area could see over an inch
of the wet stuff from Friday through next Monday. This would
significantly reduce the threat of elevated Particulate concentrations
for a while. Check back the next few days for more clarity on this
weekend's anticipated weather event. Have a good day! -J.Paul
