Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31,
2008
AND HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 2009*
VALLEY RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO SCALE BACK THEIR USE OF WOOD-BURNING
APPLIANCES AND FIREPLACES
And 2008 comes to a close under a Health Watch for PM-2.5. High
pressure isn't going anywhere until the weekend, and there hasn't been
any strong winds either. Yet, PM-2.5 concentrations were lower on
Wednesday than earlier in the week. Hopefully this can be attributed to
residents taking charge of their own health and heeding the NO BURN/
High Pollution Advisories. There is still a Health Watch in place for
today and we are EXTENDING that into New Year's Day. Previous years
have exceeded on these dates, so please do everything you can to keep
concentrations down this year. Even if you have no adverse health
affects due to fireplace smoke, your neighbor might. It's up to
everyone to help avoid repeating history.
There is good news! Another weather disturbance is expected to drop
south, pushing high pressure aside for a couple of days. Earlier models
were giving the Phoenix forecast area about a 30% chance of rain on
Sunday, possibly as much as a quarter of an inch. Now they are backing
off a bit. This happened with the Christmas system, models ultimately
returning to the original scenario two days before the rain actually
came. For now, we'll just go with the slight chance of rain, but more
likely some clearing winds. Check back tomorrow for the latest on the
weather and air quality. In the mean time, have a safe and Happy New
Year! -J.Paul
