Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH IS IN EFFECT THRU MIDNIGHT MONDAY DECEMBER 29
A PM-2.5 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY DECEMBER
30
Recent ACARS sounding data indicates that the best mixing depth today
will only be near 1800' and that dispersion will ultimately be in the
POOR range. A very strong (9+ deg C) surface-based radiation inversion
formed overnight that reaches to nearly 3K'; thus, the inversion is not
expected to break today. The outlook for Tuesday is for another strong
overnight inversion and additional warming aloft to occur, to be
accompanied by nearly calm winds. This situation, along with mostly
light winds, will be a very efficient mechanism for trapping fine
particles (PM-2.5) of combustion in an increasingly polluted layer of
air over the Valley. Monitoring equipment this morning indicated that
an hourly PM-2.5 concentration at the Durango site reached 57.2+ug/m3;
these readings will probably stay elevated into the evening hours when
another upward spike can be expected. With accumulation of fine
particles likely to continue for at least the next 36 hours or so, a
High Pollution Advisory has been issued for Tuesday with an extension
looking likely for Wednesday. Persons with respiratory problems should
consider remaining indoors.
