Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2008
A PM-2.5 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SUNDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2008*
VALLEY RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO SCALE BACK THEIR USE OF WOOD-BURNING APPLIANCES AND FIREPLACES
The rain is over the rest of the year here in the Phoenix forecast area. Phoenix Sky Harbor ended this wet December with only 0.67" of rain, 0.07" below normal. For the year, however, the total was 9.28" (1.17" above normal). That makes up a bit for last year's forgettable total of 5.05". With high pressure moving over the western U.S., we will have at least a week to dry out. Afternoon desert temperatures will rebound to the upper 60s and lower 70s by Monday. We will start the 2009 right around 70°F with sunny skies and relatively light winds. The only draw back we see this coming week will be the air quality.
Despite the near-continuous drizzle on Christmas Day across the Valley, fine particulates (PM-2.5) never dropped below the "Moderate" category. This does not bode well for the coming weekend as overnight temperatures will be much cooler (mid to upper 30s) and fireplaces will undoubtedly be in high gear. As a result, we are issuing a PM-2.5 Health Watch for Saturday and a PM-2.5 HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY for Sunday. ...Please limit the use of you wood-burning fire pits, outdoor chimineas, as well as traditional residential fireplaces... Conditions may improve slightly on Monday as everyone heads back to work. Check back on Sunday for the latest. Until then, have a great weekend! -J.Paul
