Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THRU MIDNIGHT
Data from the most recent local ACARS sounding reveals that the mixing
depth over the Valley is only 2100+' and that dispersion is POOR to
MARGINAL. Fortunately, no significant accumulation of fine particles
(PM-2.5) due to smoke emissions from fireplaces and other wood-burning
devices has occurred during the last 24 hours. Although 8:00 a.m.
monitoring data showed that hourly concentrations of PM-2.5 values at
8:00 a.m. were near 20ug/m3, levels of up to 195ug/m3 have occurred on
Christmas Eve during the past three years. Due to this propensity, the
PM-2.5 Health Watch issued yesterday will remain in effect thru
midnight. Except for perhaps some lingering elevated fine particle
concentrations on Christmas Day, no outdoor air quality concerns are
expected thru this forecast period as two more Pacific storm systems
take aim at Arizona. Rainfall is expected in the Valley on Thursday and
again on Friday - by which time a very cold air mass is expected to have
arrived overhead. -Reith
