Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 24
VALLEY RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO SCALE BACK THEIR USE OF WOOD-BURNING
APPLIANCES AND FIREPLACES
The local forecast area is expected to be between storms for the
remainder of today and into the evening hours on Wednesday. As a
result, a very weak ridge aloft ahead of the next in a series of Pacific
weather disturbances will bring with it relatively light low-level winds
and a few degrees of warming cooling aloft. In addition, thick cloud
cover on Wednesday will inhibit stronger winds aloft from mixing to the
surface. A few light showers may occur during the day on Wednesday, but
the main precipitation event is not due to begin until late Christmas
Eve. The forecast mixing height for Wednesday is currently at 5500' with
Fair to Good dispersion. Unfortunately, this means that smoke emissions
(PM-2.5) from fireplaces - which have reached unhealthy levels during
the last three Christmas Eves, is poised to do so again. Despite the
relatively unsettled weather pattern of late, PM-2.5 exceedances
occurred on Sunday and came uncomfortably close again on Monday; thus,
today's Health Watch has been extended thru Wednesday.
