Synopsis and Discussion
Nice dry cold frontal passage this morning; the dew point at Sky Harbor
Airport fell from 36 deg F at 4:00 a.m. to 19 deg F at 5:00 a.m. with
the front and northerly wind gusts up to 38 mph were recorded at Deer
Valley Airport behind the front.  This feature and its associated
weather have pretty much scoured out the Valley's fine particle
pollution problem that has been present the past 10 days.  However, a
strong ridge is poised to build overhead on Wednesday and then weaken
some on Thursday.  Even so, significant and rapid warming aloft (20-27
deg F in the 5K-10K' layer) by Thursday afternoon will dwarf the 8 deg F
increase in the afternoon ground temperature over the same period.  In
addition, under clear skies and such a dry air mass strong surface-based
inversions are likely as early as Wednesday morning, although easterly
breezes may initially offset their impacts.  Overnight lows in the 30's
and 40's may prompt more people to use their fireplaces; if so, fine
particle (PM-2.5) concentrations due to smoke emissions would increase
substantially.  There may be a need for another Health Watch issuance
before unsettled weather returns by late in the weekend.
