Synopsis and Discussion
An overnight/early morning passage of a fast-moving upper level low and
trough managed to spawn a few showers and even an isolated thunderstorm
over the local forecast area. The added moisture has combined with
elevated fine particle (PM-2.5) levels to produce a rather dense haze
over the Valley today. Fortunately, a much stronger disturbance is
headed this way from the northwest; high clouds are already on the
increase in advance of the system. Little if any additional local
precipitation is expected from this feature, but the associated tight
pressure gradient in its wake will make for very breezy to windy
conditions (gusts to 30 mph) during much of Tuesday. Cooling aloft and
the aforementioned winds are expected to result in excellent dispersion
which should help to reduce the volume of particle pollution currently
overhead. However, winds may be strong enough to stir up some dust in
areas where soils have been disturbed since the significant
precipitation event of nearly two weeks ago. On Wednesday a ridge aloft
will begin to build over the area; subsequent warming aloft (13-18 deg F
in the 5-10K layer by Thursday afternoon) and lighter winds will again
initiate stagnation of the local air mass. -Reith
