Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5,
AND HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6-7, 2008*
Oddly enough, PM-2.5 concentrations dropped off slightly on Thursday
despite the continued stagnant conditions (perhaps due to increased
moisture from cloud cover?). However, they've gone right back up again
early Friday morning. A piece of energy is expected to break off the
cut-off area of low pressure off the coast of California and move
through Arizona this weekend. Alone, it will not have much impact on
local weather with the exception of a few high clouds on Sunday. It
will facilitate the westward movement of the main jet stream right over
Arizona by Monday. With a north to south flow, we could see increased
surface movement from the north with winds around 5-10 mph on Monday.
After that, high pressure returns and anything that doesn't mix out will
get trapped once again under more stagnant conditions.
As mentioned, PM-2.5 levels dropped to the mid "Moderate" range on
Thursday, but are currently on the rise. With expected weekend
fireplace activity, those levels should threaten the health standard on
Saturday and Sunday. For this reason, we are EXTENDING the PM-2.5
Health Watch through Sunday. Check back on Sunday to see how much help
from this next disturbance we may get if at all. Until then, use
fireplaces wisely and have a great weekend! -J.Paul
