Synopsis and Discussion
Winds aloft are forecast to strengthen and become easterly through an
increasingly deep layer the next few days. This will not only help
steer summer monsoon showers and thunderstorms that develop over the
higher terrain toward the desert areas each afternoon/evening, but will
also raise the potential for higher local ozone levels due to higher
than average accumulation. Thus far considerable daytime cloud cover
has precluded much in the way of ozone formation, but with some drying
indicated for Thursday and Friday - along with afternoon temperatures
near 105 degrees - a noticeable jump in metro area ozone concentrations
is possible. Meanwhile, particle pollutant concentrations will remain
quite low due to recent rains; however, gusty outflow winds may still
generate isolated areas of blowing dust. -Reith
