Synopsis and Discussion
Extensive late afternoon cloud cover, gusty outflow winds, and heavy
rain combined to put the kibosh on ozone production on Monday. Residual
cloud cover and the prospect of additional precipitation will keep local
ozone production well below its potential today and to a lesser degree
on Wednesday. On Thursday less cloud cover, afternoon temperatures near
105 degrees, and relatively light afternoon winds due to deep easterly
flow aloft will combine to make for a potentially up day ozone-wise.
PM-10 levels at some locations were very high on Monday due to dense
blowing dust generated by wind gusts as high as 67 mph. Some hourly
readings included 1000.2ug/m3 at the Coyotes Lake monitoring site at
7:00 p.m., 1,769.2ug/m3 at Higley at 3:00 p.m., and 2,321ug/m3 at
Durango at 4:00 p.m. This is a stark reminder that even despite
occasional heavy rains, disturbed desert soils can yield extremely high
fugitive dust emissions under high-wind conditions. -Reith
