Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2008*
High pressure will return to the Four Corners area temporarily this
weekend. This will change the wind pattern from a dry, westerly flow to
a more southerly flow. Moisture will increase a bit across Arizona the
next several days, keeping overnight temperatures warm. Unfortunately,
it does not appear that thunderstorm activity will return to the Valley
within the next seven days. So, we can expect to see mostly sunny
skies, relatively light winds and a little more humidity with developing
storms over mountainous areas north and east of Phoenix.
Air quality-wise, Ozone has popped back into the "Moderate" range the
past couple of days. The return of the high and the resulting shift in
winds will affect concentrations a bit this weekend. Ozone will still
form early in the west Valley as usual. However, the southerly winds
will prevent it from freely dispersing to the east. Instead, the plume
will travel to the northeast on Saturday and Sunday. Highest
concentrations will likely remain in the mid "Moderate" range instead of
dropping off to the lower part of that category, which we often see
during the weekends. Particulates have also slipped into the low
"Moderate" range this week as we have now gone 7 days without measurable
rain in the Valley. There is an Ozone Health Watch to expire that
remains if effect for Friday due to the shifting wind pattern, but we
will allow it expire with no additional health statements for the
weekend. Check back on Sunday for the latest. Have a great weekend!
