Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR FRIDAY AUGUST 22
An upper level high center aloft is currently building over Arizona from
the west on its way to becoming temporarily re-established near the Four
Corners. Thus, the summer monsoon circulation pattern is likely to
return by late Friday; unfortunately, a significant moisture surge does
not appear to be imminent at this time. What does appear certain is
that afternoon Valley temperatures will approach 110 degrees F and local
winds aloft will become more easterly into the weekend. With no cloud
cover to speak of, daytime ozone production will be very efficient while
ozone accumulation trends upwards. This raises the potential for
near-to-unhealthy ozone levels to occur the next few days - primarily
over the east metro area. As a result, an Ozone Health Watch has been
issued for Friday with a possible weekend extension. In the meantime,
particle pollutant levels should remain relatively low thru this
forecast period. -Reith
