Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU FRIDAY AUGUST 15
A well-mixed near-surface air mass due to lingering cloud cover and
pre-dawn thunderstorm outflow boundaries has contributed to elevated
local ozone levels this a.m. The reduction in overnight ozone
scavenging has left central city sites with hourly concentrations
similar to those on the periphery. For example, at 9:00 a.m. South
Phoenix had 51 parts per billion (ppb) while West Phoenix, North
Phoenix, South Scottsdale, and Tempe all had readings in the 44-47 ppb
range. Blue Point, Fountain Hills, and Cave Creek all had hourly
concentrations near 50 ppb. This means that unless thick cloud cover
intervenes, much of the eastern portion of the greater metro will be at
risk for near-to-unhealthy ozone levels this afternoon; thus, today's
Ozone Health Watch will remain in effect. A similar synoptic situation
is possible on Friday - albeit with less afternoon cloud cover due to an
impending drying trend courtesy of northerly winds aloft - so the Health
Watch has been extended one more day. -Reith
