Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 2008*
The threat of showers and thunderstorms across the deserts will continue
into the weekend as high pressure is now in a favorable Monsoon position
and desert surface dewpoints are in the upper 50s to low 60s. Few
clouds will allow for more heating of the lower atmosphere, creating a
fair amount of instability. The models are suggesting that the best
chance for rain here in the Phoenix forecast area will be overnight
Tuesday into Wednesday, and again Wednesday night into early Thursday
morning. Amounts are not expected to be significant.
With high pressure now over the Four Corners region, easterly and
southeasterly winds have returned. This does not bode well for low
ozone levels. Again, ozone typically forms early in the west Valley and
migrates to the east throughout the day as winds turn out of the west.
With winds now staying out of the east much of the day, ozone has
nowhere to go but north. Therefore, we expected a significant increase
in ozone concentrations the next few days in the west, central and
northern parts of the Valley, potentially resulting in an HPA by the end
of the week. For now, we are issuing an Ozone Health Watch for
Wednesday. We'll review the situation again tomorrow. Until then, have
a good day! -J.Paul
