Synopsis and Discussion

Surprise, surprise! A nice little thunderstorms cell popped up around 8pm last night in north Phoenix and continued west through Glendale, Peoria, Sun City and yes, Surprise, Arizona. Brief rain fell across those locations with totals between 0.04 and 0.24 inches of measurable rain. Even Phoenix Sky Harbor saw a Trace, so it officially rained in Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday! This storm was just a reminder that the Arizona Monsoon is not over yet. It just took a brief vacation. We can expect to see an increase in chances for thunderstorms across the Valley this week. Models are still a little sketchy as to when the best days will be. The ETA model suggests Tuesday afternoon and evening could be the winner. It's possible that the latest Tropical Storm Edouard slated to hit Texas in the next couple of days could push west, giving our region a boost in Monsoon moisture later this weekend. Remembering Hurricane Dolly's impact (or lack there of), I would say that it probably won't happen.

For the second day in a row, Apache Junction and Queen Valley were the only monitors in the collaborative network to reach "Moderate" concentrations. Early morning clouds on Monday could mean a repeat of the past couple days. We should see more sunshine the next several days, but with the increased moisture temperatures will only be around 104-108°F. With thunderstorms, there is always a chance for blowing dust. However, the ground has been fairly damp this season, so we will keep Particulates in the upper "Good" range for a few more days. Check back tomorrow for more. Have a good day! -J.Paul
