Synopsis and Discussion
The Phoenix metro area remained awash in ground-level ozone over the
weekend; westerly surface winds pushed highest concentrations over the
far east Valley on Saturday and easterly winds brought them to the
central and west Valley on Sunday. This morning's ozone time-series
graphs indicate that very little ozone scavenging occurred overnight -
hourly concentrations of even most central city sites remained in the
40-60 parts per billion range thru the pre-dawn period; with easterly
winds tapering off later this afternoon, there is a risk that much of
the Valley will experience elevated 8-hour ozone levels today. On
Tuesday some increase in high clouds along with ozone dispersion
provided by increasing afternoon winds should help lower ozone levels a
bit, but by Wednesday morning another influx of ozone and its precursors
from the west is possible as a strong trough moves over the western U.S.
In addition, winds may be strong enough to generate areas of blowing
dust - mainly over the west Valley - with near-unhealthy levels of
coarse particles (PM-10) to follow. Synergistic effects of high ozone
and particle levels may pose an increased health risk for those with
heart or lung disease; multiple watches may be issued. -Reith
