Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THURSDAY APRIL 24
Local ozone production/levels dropped off significantly on Wednesday as
surface winds up to 35 mph increased from the southwest ahead of an
approach upper level trough and surface cold front. California ozone
AQI maps from April 23 indicate that ozone levels upstream also
experienced a noticeable decline from the previous day. Thru 10:00 a.m.
Thursday morning Valley ozone monitors are running slightly higher than
24 hours ago over the west metro area and lower over the east metro
area. Upstream winds between 5 and 10K' will remain conducive to
ozone/precursor transport from the west today. Depending on the volume,
a few Valley sites may reach unhealthy levels this afternoon; thus,
today's Ozone High Pollution Advisory will remain in effect today but
the east valley will be the most susceptible. A strong ridge aloft will
slowly build over the western U.S. beginning Friday and its axis is not
forecast to arrive overhead until Monday. A drop in local particle air
pollutant levels is predicted by Saturday, but ozone concentrations
should remain elevated due to strong daytime heating and lighter winds.
