Synopsis and Discussion
AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY APRIL 22
The highest local 8-hour ozone levels of the season occurred on Sunday -
despite relatively cool daytime highs in the mid 80's, southwest to
westerly wind gusts near 30 mph, and typically lower weekend ozone
precursor emissions. The primary factor contributing to the elevated
ozone concentrations appears to be an influx of additional ozone and/or
its precursors from California on winds in the 5K-10K' layer. A
supporting piece of evidence was the near-exceedance at Yuma (97 AQI)
where the highest hourly ozone level of 83 parts per billion occurred at
5:00 p.m. Since most ozone monitoring sites around the Valley are
registering higher ozone levels this morning than 24 hours ago, and
since winds will remain conducive to additional transport from
California thru this afternoon, there is the potential for elevated
ozone levels to persist thru Tuesday; as a result, an Ozone Health Watch
has been issued. Highest ozone levels are expected to occur over the
northeast and east portions of the Valley. Increasing southwesterly
winds on Wednesday associated with an approaching trough should help
lower ozone levels then. -Reith
