Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR TODAY
Plenty of suspended dust particles - raised & transported by gusty winds
on Tuesday - remain over the local forecast area this morning and are
contributing to relatively poor visibilities. With the cold frontal
boundary east of the metro area, mostly sunny skies and afternoon
temperatures in the mid-70's should allow today's best mixing depth of
over 10K' to be realized. This in turn will encourage 30-35 mph winds
at that altitude to reach the surface later today followed by the
potential for more blowing dust; thus, the PM-10 (coarse particle)
Health Watch issued for today will remain in effect. Transport winds
from California on Monday evidently left ozone precursor-rich air over
the Valley on Tuesday; nearly every monitor showed a pronounced spike in
ozone production that managed to lift most readings into the low to
mid-moderate range of the Air Quality Index. Despite the early cloud
cover, ozone levels remained elevated this morning and with additional
transport ongoing, similar readings are possible today. Breezy to
marginally windy weather will occur again on Thursday as the regional
pressure gradient remains tight, but ozone and particle pollutant levels
are forecast to lower. -Reith
