Synopsis and Discussion
TODAY'S LATE AFTERNOON/EVENING PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED THRU
WEDNESDAY APRIL 09
With the approach of a vigorous but dry upper level trough and surface
cold front, winds are still expected to increase by late this afternoon,
remain quite breezy overnight, and strengthen again on Wednesday.
Similar conditions contributed to unhealthy levels of coarse particles
(PM-10) over the west Valley on March 14; no measurable rain has fallen
since then and daytime temperatures mostly in the 80's the past few
weeks have only served to make soil conditions even drier. Not only
will locally dry and disturbed areas of soil be especially prone to
fugitive dust (coarse particle/PM-10) emissions, but some transport of
airborne dust from desert areas between Phoenix and Yuma area is also
possible by late this afternoon. Due to the continued potential for
coarse particle concentrations to approach unhealthy levels in some
areas - particularly the west Valley - today's a PM-10 Health Watch has
been extended thru Wednesday as a precaution for those with heart or
lung disease. Breezy conditions from the north are forecast to occur on
Thursday as high pressure begins to build overhead. -Reith
