Synopsis and Discussion
Let the flood gates open! Well, it may not be flooding rains, but when
all is said and done, Phoenix could see just over an inch of the wet
stuff. Coming into Friday, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport has only received
2.23" of rain for the year. That's a whopping 4.61" below the annual
normal. Though Friday and Saturday's rain event won't be enough to get
us over the top this year, every little bit helps. Air quality-wise,
this rain will significantly lower particulate levels as the
moisture-starved soil soaks ever last drop. As a result, it will take a
while for dust particles to become airborne in the amounts that cause
health concerns. Models are suggesting that December could be a pretty
interesting month in terms of weather as the high pressure over the
Pacific allows wave after wave of low pressure to drop south into the
region. This could mean more rain for the forecast area before year's
end. It may be a while before we issue another Health Watch for PM10.
Colder air will always keep PM2.5 in play, especially if resident's
light their fireplaces more frequently during the next several weeks.
But for now, all pollutants will be in the "Good" range at least through
the weekend. Enjoy the rain! -J.Paul
