Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR TUESDAY NOVEMBER 27
After a pretty thorough cleansing due to gusty winds and excellent
dispersion on Saturday, the air mass over the Valley had begun to
stagnate again by this morning and is expected to continue to do so for
at least the next few days. Local ACARS sounding data indicates that a
3-4 deg C surface-based radiation inversion formed overnight, that it
extends to near 1700', and that it will not break until surface
temperatures reach 65 deg F; as of 10:00 a.m. they were in the low to
mid 50's. The best mixing depth started out near 5300' but had dropped
to near 4800' by 10:30 a.m. and will likely drop some more as warming
aloft (up to 13 deg F at the 5K' level by Tuesday afternoon) continues.
With the resumption of work-day activities, hourly PM-10 (coarse
particle) levels have risen significantly. At the West Forty Third
monitoring site concentrations ranged from 159.6ug/m3 to 240.0ug/m3
between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m.; at the Durango site they ranged from
153.7ug/m3 to 175.9ug/m3 between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m.; and at the Coyote
Lakes site a 250+ug/m3 reading was recorded at 6:00 a.m. and the 9:00
a.m. reading was 153.9ug/m3. Since dispersion is not expected to
improve much the next 24 hours, a PM-10 Health Watch has been issued for
Tuesday as a precaution for those with heart or lung disease. -Reith
