Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE REMAINDER OF TODAY
Local ACARS soundings reveal that another steep (8-9 deg C)
surface-based radiation inversion formed overnight. Some very high
hourly PM-10 concentrations occurred this morning: the Durango site
registered a 378.7ug/m3 reading at 6:00 a.m., 475.0ug/m3 at 7:00 a.m.,
and 261.0ug/m3 at 8:00 a.m. The highest reading at the West Forty Third
site was 252.4ug/m3 at 7:00 a.m. Due to the aforementioned high PM-10
levels, and since a weak weather disturbance will spread considerable
cloudiness over the Valley by early afternoon that will inhibit/delay
the onset of vertical mixing due to daytime heating, a PM-10 Health
Watch has been issued as a precaution for those with heart or lung
disease. The track and timing of the strong and cold trough due over
the area by Saturday has changed somewhat, but it should still
contribute toward much better air quality over the weekend. In the
meantime, particle levels have the potential to be rather high again on
Thanksgiving Day due holiday travel and recreational fireplace usage.
