Synopsis and Discussion
It got worse before it got better... Particulate levels exceeded the
health standard at two of the local PM10 monitors and three in Pinal
County. The area of low pressure that tapped into southern moisture and
spewed in north in the way of clouds and a few showers and isolated
thunderstorms also kicked up some additional dust before clearing out.
Already this morning there is a noticeable difference in the skyline
from 24 hours earlier with less dust in the air. Monitors are verifying
this will lower particulate readings Friday morning. This will not
last, however, as high pressure quickly returns this afternoon and
remains in control through the weekend. Mixing heights will drop as
will winds on Sunday, meaning that nearly stagnant conditions will allow
more particulates to accumulate in the forecast area. We're looking to
a strong system on Wednesday to really clean the Valley out as it dives
south along the Rockies. Rain is still questionable for our area with
that one, but much cooler air will be the story. We're looking at a
high in the mid 70s on Thanksgiving Day here in Phoenix. We'll see how
this scenario holds up. So check back on Sunday. Until then, enjoy
your weekend! -J.Paul
