Synopsis and Discussion
A PM-10 HEALTH WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT TODAY. A PM-10 HIGH POLLUTION
ADVISORY AND A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY
NOVEMBER 08.
The ridge aloft that remains anchored over Arizona will maintain the
rather stagnant air mass currently over the local forecast area thru at
least Friday. Warm air aloft, morning inversions, periodic shallow
mixing heights, and now periods of high cloud cover have all contributed
to less than favorable mixing - especially during the morning and
evening hours. This situation has and will continue to allow a build-up
of particle pollutant concentrations over the metro area and beyond that
will have potential health impacts on those with heart or lung disease.
Hourly PM-10 (coarse particle) concentrations were very high at some
sites this morning; at 7:00 a.m. West Forty Third recorded 489.1ug/m3,
Durango had 346.8ug/m3, and Coyote Lakes had 361.7ug/m3. Since such high
readings pose a risk for an exceedance of the 24-hour federal health
standard, and little in the way of lasting improvement in weather
conditions is expected, a PM-10 High Pollution Advisory has been issued
for Thursday. In addition, the fact that PM-2.5 (fine particle)
concentrations levels have begun to approach unhealthy levels at some
locations has prompted the issuance of a PM-2.5 Health Watch. Stronger
winds and better dispersion are forecast to occur on Sunday with the
passage of an upper level trough. -Reith
