Synopsis and Discussion
Recent rainfall will continue to contribute to good air quality today and most of Monday. A strong regional wind event is likely to occur on Tuesday with the approach and arrival of an intense upper trough and surface cold front in the mid-latitude storm track. Soil stabilization provided by last week’s rainfall has greatly reduced the chance for thick locally-generated blowing dust and unhealthy levels of coarse particles due to wind speeds that may exceed 40 mph at times by afternoon. However, most desert areas between Phoenix and Yuma and over southeast California received only light amounts of rain and there is still the potential for widespread airborne dust to move over the local forecast area. For this reason a PM-10 Health Watch will probably be issued tomorrow for Tuesday as a precaution for those with heart or lung disease.
