Synopsis and Discussion
*AN OZONE HEALTH WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR MONDAY, JULY 30, 2007*
Thick clouds, spotty showers – that was what Valley residents dealt with from sun up to sun down Saturday. Sunday is a different story. Mostly sunny skies and a good easterly flow is providing for a typical monsoon morning and likely afternoon. We should see thunderstorms begin to build over the mountain north and east of the Valley with a few becoming severe. We will be at the mercy of the terrain and sunshine as to how quickly and exactly what path they will take to get here. The bigger concern however, is ozone levels. The lack of cloud cover provides unimpeded sunshine to bake the precursors for quite some time this afternoon. One forecast model shows that Phoenix could see relatively high levels of ozone on Sunday and Monday despite Saturday’s “Good” levels for all pollutants. This is a highly possible scenario as wind flow will continue to be out of the east under mostly sunny skies for at least the first half of the day. Thus, we are issuing an Ozone Health Watch for Monday. Any debris clouds from late-night and early-morning storms Monday into Tuesday may be enough to slow ozone generation and keep us from an exceedance on Tuesday. But Monday could be close. Check back tomorrow for further updates. Have a good day! –J.Paul
