Synopsis and Discussion

AN OZONE HIGH POLLUTION ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY JULY 05
Local ozone levels are forecast to climb significantly the next few days as many weather-related contributors occur simultaneously. These include increasing near-surface relatively humidity courtesy of the onset of the summer monsoon, daytime high temperatures between 110 and 115 degrees, a reversal in the mean wind direction between the surface and 10K’ from westerly to easterly, mostly sunny skies, high sun-angle and long day-length, and the potential for outflow boundaries from high-terrain thunderstorms as early as Thursday evening. Valley ozone levels rose modestly on Tuesday and are running higher at some sites this morning than 24 hours ago. Climatologically, peak ozone levels in the Phoenix metro area begin to occur with the onset of the summer monsoon, and during such episodes all areas of the valley are susceptible to elevated to unhealthy concentrations. For these reasons an Ozone High Pollution Advisory has been issued and will probably be extended thru Friday and perhaps longer. Coarse particle levels are also poised to increase due to thunderstorm outflow-generated blowing dust. In addition, lots of smoke shed from the 3000+ acre “CHITTY” Fire in Greenlee County was observed over much of south central and southeast Arizona this morning. Persons with breathing problems should stay indoors. -Reith
