Synopsis and Discussion
*A PM-2.5 HEALTH WATCH IS BEING ISSUED FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2008*
And there you have it... Recreational residential wood burning has done
it again, causing an apparent exceedance of the PM2.5 health standard at
both Phoenix Supersite and West Phoenix. The cameras at
http://phoenixvis.net/ clearly show the Valley draped in a blanket of
haze. We do have a little weather system approaching the forecast area
from the southwest on New Years Day which is expected to bring breezy
winds with gusts around 35 mph at times. The dilemma: Will this be
enough to blow the remnant smoke out of the Valley even though models
suggest maximum mixing height will only be around 1500ft? Despite the
strong daytime winds, overnight accumulation of smoke could cause
further exceedances. The solution is that we are issuing a PM-2.5
Health Watch for New Years Day. Residents with respiratory disease
should really consider staying indoors as much as possible the next
couple of nights. A temporary ridge of high pressure will bring
somewhat warmer weather to the region Wednesday and Thursday, but it
looks like a rainy system may move into Arizona Friday through next
Monday, bringing relief to the particulate issues. Stay tuned for more
on that in the coming days. Have a happy and safe New Year!
