Synopsis and Discussion
A cold trough of low pressure has brought clear skies and much improved visibility to the Phoenix forecast area Wednesday and Thursday. Winds across the Valley were forecast to be around 10 to 20 mph on Thursday, and with the lack of moisture, course particulate levels (PM10) were forecast to increase into the "Moderate" range on Thursday. So far it doesn't look like that is occurring, but it's still a possibility. High pressure will quickly rebound Friday through New Year's Day, providing the region with mostly light winds under sunny skies. Afternoon desert temperatures will increase steadily each day heading into the New Year where the high in Phoenix could reach a perfect 70°F. With light winds, cold mornings and the festive season still upon us, we could see a repeat of Christmas Day with PM2.5 levels soaring well above the health standard next Monday and Tuesday due to residential wood burning. We've mentioned it before and will keep saying it. Wood burning needs to be limited as much as possible in the Valley during the holiday season, especially under these weather conditions. Let's make it a picture perfect New Year's! Check back tomorrow for more on your weekend's weather and air quality. Have a good day! -J.Paul
