Synopsis and Discussion
Light easterly winds across the Valley Wednesday morning have helped to clear some of the Particle pollution. As anticipated, however, local residential wood burning sent Fine Particulate levels through the roof on Christmas Day. West Phoenix was in the "Unhealthy" (Red) category yesterday while Phoenix Supersite was in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" (Orange) range. These fine particulates also assisted PM10 levels in reaching the "Moderate" range at a couples monitors. We are expecting a dry, wind-producing system to drop into Arizona early Thursday which could further aid in clearing the Valley. High pressure will return Friday through early next week, allowing afternoon desert temperatures to approach 70°F on New Year's Day. With high pressure comes light winds and decreased mixing. As history has taught us, residential wood burning typically ramps up again on New Year's Eve. Fireplace usage coupled with the expected weather conditions means bad air quality could return once again at that time. Everyone can do their part in refraining from wood burning as much as possible during the next week or so. Check back tomorrow for more. Have a good day! -J.Paul
