Synopsis and Discussion
Skies have cleared, dewpoints are dropping. We're looking at a pretty quiet next several days with the exception of Friday. A cold front is expected to whip through the region Friday, increasing winds a bit from the west while keeping afternoon desert temperatures around 60°F. You might notice that the horizon has a slight brown tint to it already despite the systems we've had the past couple of weeks. It's not dust, because the ground is still pretty damp. A likely culprit is residential fireplaces. Some fireplaces were unnecessarily going as early as 5:30pm Wednesday and the temperature outside at that time was still in the upper 50s! This, coupled with strong inversions through next week, will likely lead to the issuance of Health Watches or even HPAs as early as this weekend. We can all do our part in reducing the fine particulate emissions (PM2.5) during unfavorable weather conditions (strong inversions) by scaling back on the use of fireplaces and outdoor chimineas. Limited use now will likely make festive fireplace lighting on Christmas and New Years Eve possible. Check back tomorrow for a look at your weekend weather and air quality. Have a good day! -J.Paul
