Synopsis and Discussion
Right on cue
just as we were saying that Sky Harbor Airport was 0.84 inches below normal for the month of July with one day to go, it reaches out and grabs 0.22 inches from a cell that dropped more than an inch of rain in Paradise Valley in less than a half an hour. That officially puts Phoenix as 0.63 inches below normal for the month of July. But today is a new day and a new month and on radar, we are already seeing storms fire up in southern Maricopa County and Graham, Cochise and Pima Counties with a southeast to northwest flow. This means that all Phoenix eyes will be towards the southeast this afternoon. Typically, storms from this area result in walls of blowing dust preceding the arrival of subsequent rain, so we may be in for a dust storm or two this afternoon and evening. Ozone and Coarse Particulates just reached into the low to mid “Moderate” range at a couple of sites Tuesday. With lingering high clouds this morning, it will be unlikely that ozone will climb any higher this afternoon. Particulates will increase in the event of any dust fronts that push through the forecast area. More of the same is expected Thursday. A slight decrease in storm activity on Friday could mean a greater potential for ozone development. Check back tomorrow for an early glimpse at your weekend. Have a good day! –J.Paul
