Synopsis and Discussion
Thunderstorm outflow-generated winds of up to 50 mph reached the metro area from the east and southeast after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The winds managed to produce widespread blowing and suspended dust that dropped visibilities to as low as 1/8 of a mile at some locations. As a result, PM-10 levels spiked to their highest values since April 20; some hourly concentrations included 997ug/m3 at the West Forty Third site and 921ug/m3 at the Higley site. A repeat performance is possible late this afternoon since easterly steering flow will tend to move storms off the higher terrain toward the metro area. The upper level low responsible for importing the moisture for thunderstorm development will move east out of the area by Monday, followed by a return of westerly flow aloft more typical of this time of year. A weak trough in that flow will approach the forecast area on Tuesday with an increase in afternoon westerly winds and cloud cover predicted for that day. -Reith
