Location: The Highway 260 and Main Street Study Area is located in the city of Cottonwood, Ariz. The site is generally bounded to the north by the Mingus Avenue, to the south by Mongini Lane, to the east by the Verde River and to the west by South 15th Street, South Main Street and Highway 260. The site includes a mixture of public, commercial and residential land uses along State Route Highway 260.

Contaminants of concern: Tetrachloroethene (PCE) is a man-made solvent commonly used in the dry cleaning process and as a degreaser in many industrial applications. Trichloroethene (TCE) is a solvent primarily used in metal degreasing and cleaning operations and can also be a breakdown product of PCE.

Action taken: An October 2015 sampling identified PCE, TCE and cis-1,2-DCE in several wells across the area. Two samples had a PCE concentration above the Aquifer Water Quality Standard (AWQS) of 5 μg/L. The highest PCE concentration was 20 μg/L, detected in the sample collected from a private domestic well. PCE was present at a concentration of 8.6 μg/L in a mobile home park well supplying water to 14 residences. No other Volatile Organic Compounds were detected at concentrations above the applicable AWQS during the October 2015 sampling.
