Background

Over the last decade, ADEQ has significantly improved our processes by eliminating waste and deepening our technical expertise | View our key performance metrics and progress >

Specific results achieved by our Hazardous Waste Program since 2012 include:

  • Processing Hazardous Waste permits 567% faster,
  • Conducting 169% more facility inspections,
  • Outreach has increased facility compliance by 48%, and
  • Hazardous Waste facilities are returning to compliance 246% faster.

Current Hazardous Waste Program permitting and generation fees were established in 2012. The Arizona Legislature granted ADEQ the authority during the 2022 legislative session to increase fees and equip ADEQ to continue to protect public health and the environment through a fully funded program. The Hazardous Waste Program is currently operating with a deficit. Updated fees must be established in rule by April 2023 to ensure that ADEQ has the appropriate funding in place to continue critical mission work.

With a fully funded Hazardous Waste Program, ADEQ will continue:

  • Operating the federal hazardous waste program in Arizona as authorized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
  • Issuing environmentally protective permits quickly,
  • Serving as a resource for the regulated community to know how regulations apply to them through our outreach programs, and
  • Supporting economic growth while collaborating on responsible pollution prevention.
